WORK ON AN OIL RIG AND EARN A MINIMUM OF $3600.00 PER MONTH – TAX-FREE
Wow! How’s that for a statement…how’s that for a start-up salary! I know what you are doing now… dreaming of what you are going to buy first! Unlike other industries, oil companies have a high employee turnover rate, thus there are always open vacancies. Anybody has a chance to get a job. These jobs are available on oil rigs scattered all over the world, open to any person in the world. Candidates for these posts should be hardworking, dedicated to the job and the ability to work long hours. If you had any experience working in the oil industry, it would count immensely in your favour.
There are many "entry-level" posts (posts for people who have no experience) available on a rig. Most of the posts will be mentioned later. This information will not guarantee you a job. You will have to put in the effort, time and “legwork” in order to make it work for you. It will point you in the right direction and to establish a starting point in your quest to be employed in the oil industry. Included herein is also some “inside information” that you can use to match your skills to the right company and occupation.
So, where are these oil rigs situated? They are basically scattered all over the world, with the biggest concentration of offshore rigs in the Gulf of Mexico and off the coast of California. Other active areas include Canada, Alaska, South America, the North Sea, West Africa, the former Soviet Union, the Middle East and the Far East. There are also various land based rigs all over the USA, Canada and North Africa.
There are three types of offshore companies:
-
Operating companies (usually large oil companies) which holds the drilling licences and operate the production platforms
-
Drilling companies which are contracted to do the drilling work
-
Service companies which provide specialist work to both the above companies. These services can vary from seismic firms, diving companies, mud suppliers to catering companies (I actually included several catering companies in the address list - if you can't get a job at any of the other two companies, start off as a galley hand, for example.
TIP: The main objective is to get a job on a rig (ANY job on ANY rig). Once on a rig, you can find out about the availability of other posts)
Before we begin, I might give you a brief overview of the oil industry:
Oil can be defined as a mixture of a variety of paraffinic hydrocarbons mixed with aromatics and impurities. It is basically an oily, flammable liquid which occurs naturally in deposits beneath the surface of the earth. Over millions of years, animal and plant remains settled to the bottom of shallow seas. As the water receded over the years, it was covered by mud, silt and other materials. Due to the lack of oxygen, the decomposition turned to petroleum which seeped through fissures in the rock bed. With the earth's tectonic plates moving, natural pockets were formed to trap the crude oil in pools. Further movement allowed some of these oils to escape and seep through the earth's surface. In the Middle East, where this first occurred, the local people used this substance for medicine, waterproofing their boats etc. Then came the internal combustion engine and the oil industry bloomed! Besides the manufacturing of petrol, crude oil is also the main ingredient of diesel, paraffin, bitumen for road as well as shampoo, cosmetics, detergents, paint, ink, plastics plus a miriad of other products. And this is why you have a chance of getting a well-paid job.
Drill rigs:
Any drill rig (albeit onshore or offshore) is made up of four basic parts -
1. The rotary table, which is situated under the derrick and houses the hexagonal tod (Kelly). The Kelly, in turn, is connected to lengths of drill pipe. At the end of these, there are drill collars and/or weights. The whole construction is ended off with the drill bit. The whole assembly (drillstring) could be up to four kilometres long.
2. The draw-works is basically a huge winch which raises and lowers the travelling block connected to the Kelly by a swivel. The draw-works must be able to handle loads of hundreds of tons.
3. The mud system circulates special "mud" down the drillstring. This "mud" serves as a lubricant and controls the escape of oil and gas (by manipulating the density of the "mud").
. Then there is the BOP (Blow Out Preventer) which, in fact, is a series of huge valves. The efficient operation of the BOP is vital, as it prevents an uncontrollable blowout of oil and gas. (It acts as a backup to the mud system). To give you an idea to the scale of which we are talking here, the BOP is about the size of a three storey building and sits far below the sea bed.

Submersible:
Normally used in relatively shallow waters. After being towed to the appropriate site, it is submerged until it sits on the seabed. Although it is standing solidly, anchors can also be used to keep it steady.
Drillship:
This could be one of two types:
a) a ship that is specially designed and built to be a drillship or
b) an older vessel that has been refitted with drilling equipment. These vessels are self-propelled and are anchored in the conventional way or by a computer-operated dynamic positioning thrusters which keeps the vessel in place without the aid of any anchors.
Semi-submersible:
The hull is catamaran-shaped and can be towed or be moved under self-propulsion. Once in position the ballasts are filled and the rig sinks to a depth of about 15 metres so as to give it more stability. It will be anchored. These rigs are the heavy-duty type and can withstand harsh weather conditions.
Jack-up:
These rigs are towed to the location and by way of heavy machinery, the legs are jacked down until they sit on the ocean floor. Once the leg reach the ocean floor, the whole rig is raised about 15 metres above the sea level.
Derrick/Pipe-Lay barge:
These are used to make heavy lifts. It is usually used to lay underwater pipelines. These barges can be self-propelled or towed.
Production platforms:
After the exploratory hole has been drilled, a platform structure is built over the site. These structures are permanent of nature.
Please note: Yes, we do offer an address list for sale. This is not compulsory - but will assist you tremendously when applying. It also includes info about working in Alaska as well as info regarding working on a Cruise Liner if, for some reason, you are not successful in getting an offshore job.
BUT, if any company/recruitment agency asks you for upfront money for "admin" fee or "registration" fee etc.....drop them as soon as possible - it most probably is a scam! Nobody should pay any money to get a job!!
